History of St. John Nepomucene |
History Of St. John Nepomucene Church in Weston |
|
St. John grew up in Nepomuk and was born about 1340; he died on 20 March, 1393. In his early childhood, John Nepomucene was cured of a disease through the prayers of his good parents. In thanksgiving, they consecrated him to the service of God. After he was ordained, he was sent to a parish in the city of Prague. He became a great preacher, and thousands of those who listened to him changed their way of life. Father John was invited to the court of Wenceslaus IV. He settled arguments and did many kind deeds for the needy people of the city. He also became the queen's confessor. When the king was cruel to the queen, Father John taught her to bear her cross patiently. One day, about 1393, the king asked him to tell what the queen had said in confession. When Father John refused, he was thrown into prison. A second time, he was asked to reveal the queen's confession. "If you do not tell me," said the king, "you shall die. But if you obey my commands, riches and honor will be yours." Again Father John refused. He was tortured. The king ordered to be thrown into the river. Where he drowned, a strange brightness appeared upon the water. He is known as the "martyr of the confessional." He is patron of Czechoslovakia, where he is invoked against floods and against slander. His feast day is May 16. |
The first church in Weston was built in 1885 and it measured at 24X30 feet. It was named in honor of Saint John Nepomuc or Nepomucene as it was later known as. On December 8, 1885 Father William Choka of Omaha celebrated the first Holy Mass in the new church. In the first four years of the church, Fathers William Choka and Stutz attended to the new parish. In the beginning of the church there were only 32 Catholic families in the parish, and after 12 years there was 140 families. In 1891 a new sacristy and annex was added onto the church. In 1894 the church bought five lots of land adjoining the church for $200. On February 11, 1901 Father Mathias Bor became the new pastor. He soon found out that the church was too small. Within three days of his fundraising efforts, he secured $10,000 for his new church. The new building would be 101X42 feet. the building was contracted out for a total of $12,750. On June 25, 1906, Bishop Bonacum dedicated the new church. Father Bor was appointed as the first resident pastor of St. John Nepomuc Parish on February 28, 1915. During the Pastorate of Father York (1974-1982) the church was remodeled and repaired. The project included painting, carpeting, new pews, and many more improvements. More than 100 parishioners volunteered for the work. |
