St. George (?-303AD) St. George enlisted into the Cavalry of the Roman Army at age 17, during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian, and quickly gained reputation amongst his peers, for his good behavior, physical strength, and his bearing and valor. Because of a rumor that the Christians were plotting the death of Galerius, an edict was issued by Diocletian that all Christian Churches were to be destroyed and all scriptures burnt. Anyone admitting to being a Christian, would lose his rights as a citizen, if not his life. St. George, a Christian convert, acted to limit Diocletian's actions against the Christians. As news spread of his rebellion against the persecutions St. George realized that it would not be long before he was arrested. He prepared for the event by disposing of his property to the poor and he freed his slaves.
The
Emperor consigned St George to prison with instructions that he be tortured
until he denied his faith in Christ. St. George, having defended his
faith was beheaded at Nicomedia in Palestine on April 23rd, 303 AD. In
honor of his brave and military nature, St. George is often pictured slaying
a dragon. St. George was canonized by Pope Gelasius in 494AD. |

Parish History Due to a growing size of the parish in Prague, the first Catholic parish was established in Morse Bluff, and Cedar Hill became a mission. On March 16, 1945, Bishop Louis B. Kucera named Father George J. Livanec, who was then assistant at St. Wenceslaus Church in Wahoo, as the first pastor of the new parish. St. George's Catholic Church had its beginning in a dance hall above the Wolf Garage. In 1955 the parishioners completed the present church building. |
